This is the largest number of greyhound shipments to China since 2009, a rise of nearly 90 per cent over the last decade.


It comes as the Government pushes for the ban, which would see thousands of dogs seized from owners and sent across the Channel as they entered the UK on greyhound permits.


The European Union announced that it was putting measures in place to tackle the problem, with the goal of eventually banning all greyhound exports to China.


The UK government said: 'China will be a safe haven for greyhounds to live and breed for many years to come.'

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has already set up a 'pursuit' squad to stop illegal imports.


It has already fined six owners of greyhound breeds and charged more than £1million in fees to China over the issue.

China has now agreed to help enforce the ban, with an official warning that at least 30,000 dogs may be in the country illegally.
